Sarasota Relocation Guide

Welcome to Sarasota
Sarasota is located on the west coast of Florida directly on the Gulf of Mexico, about an hour's drive south of Tampa. Often called the "Crown Jewel" of Florida's southwest Gulf Coast, Sarasota has earned recognition as "Florida's Cultural Capital" for its exceptional arts scene, world-class museums, and vibrant performing arts community.
Known for its stunning white-sand beaches, particularly Siesta Key Beach (ranked #1 Beach in America in 2011, 2017, 2020, and 2025), Sarasota offers a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural sophistication, and laid-back coastal living. The area encompasses diverse neighborhoods from downtown urban living to barrier island retreats, historic districts, and master-planned communities.
Access to Sarasota is convenient from I-75 with four major exits: University Parkway (Exit 213), Fruitville Road (Exit 210), Bee Ridge Road (Exit 207), and Clark Road (Exit 205). These routes connect residents to all areas of Sarasota County, from the beaches to inland communities.

World-Class White Sandy Beaches
Sarasota is known around the world for its beaches. All beaches are free and open to the public with daily sunsets over the tropical blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico. In 2011 and 2017, Siesta Key Beach was awarded the distinct recognition as The Best Beach in America by Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman (Dr. Beach), Professor and Director of the Laboratory for Coastal Research at Florida International University.
"Siesta Beach boasts the finest and whitest sand in the world—the powdery sand is nearly pure quartz crystal. The beautiful blue-colored water is clean and clear, making it so inviting to bathers and swimmers. The beach is hundreds of yards wide, attracting volleyball players and beachcombers. Waves at Siesta Beach are normally measured in inches and the beach gradually slopes into the Gulf waters, making it a very safe area for children."

Cost of Living & Tax Advantages
From an economic perspective, moving to Florida makes tremendous financial sense. The State of Florida has been very strategic in attracting permanent residents through favorable tax policies.
No State Income Tax
Florida has no state income tax. If you previously lived in a state with income tax, you'll immediately see significant savings. Many northern states charge 5-10% or more in state income taxes, which adds up to thousands of dollars annually.
Homestead Exemption
Florida residents who establish their primary residence receive a Homestead Exemption of up to $50,000. The first $25,000 applies to all property taxes, including school district taxes. The additional $25,000 exemption applies to the assessed value over $50,000 (excluding school taxes). For example, a home assessed at $300,000 would be taxed as though it were worth $250,000.
Save Our Homes Cap
Once you establish homestead, Florida's "Save Our Homes" amendment caps annual increases in your home's assessed value at 3% or the rate of inflation (whichever is lower), protecting you from dramatic property tax increases even as home values rise.
Additional Cost Savings
Many families discover unexpected savings beyond taxes. Clothing budgets decrease significantly—you no longer need heavy winter coats, boots, and multiple seasonal wardrobes. You can wear the same style of clothing year-round.
Vehicle maintenance costs also drop dramatically. Without exposure to road salt, snow, ice, and harsh winter conditions, cars last longer and require fewer repairs. Many northern residents regularly replaced rusted mufflers, shocks, ball joints, and springs. In Sarasota's mild climate, these repairs become rare.
